Either way, today’s Boosted Education topic will hopefully help spark some ideas for your next mod under $1000.00 Cold Air Intakes: Upgrading your intake from the OEM system is not going to give you substantial horsepower gains, but it will increase your driving experience through sound! We all love to hear our cars while driving them, and an intake is going to provide those induction noises we all love! If you have a naturally aspirated engine, this is going to benefit you the most. Your engine is going to breathe easier and you are likely to notice an increase in throttle response. The majority of Cold Air Intake systems are going to come in under that $1000 budget. Similar to an upgraded Intake, an aftermarket exhaust will allow you to hear an audible response to each throttle input you give your car! Whether that's acceleration or deceleration noise, it’s all very satisfying! Depending on your taste, it’s important not to make your car too loud. You don’t want to be discouraged from driving your car due to it being too loud to start early or late in the day, and you definitely don’t want it so loud that you’re irritating other motorists and/or making donations to your local police department. Tasteful volume is key to enjoying this modification.  Granted, if you have a dedicated track car, then you have the ability to raise the volume a bit. Many race tracks do have sound limits, so volume is still something to be mindful of. Many Axle-Back Systems, some Cat-Backs or even just a Muffler upgrade are all likely to be under $1000. This means you may need to purchase an Air-Fuel Ratio Gauge and Wideband along with Standalone ECU. Then have your ECU calibrated on the Dyno to ensure the engine is operating in safe and efficient parameters. Quality Performance Parts Will Save You Time & Money!  Building a car is exciting. We all want to get our cars done as soon as possible so we can enjoy our creation. Whether it's a show car, drift car, drag car etc. We all take pride in our cars and when they’re sitting on jack stands, it can be frustrating - sparking impatience. In the mindset of “I want this car done ASAP”, we may find ourselves tempted by the “cheaper” option on certain components in order to buy more at once, finish our project quicker and feel we are saving money at the same time. If this is already feeling like a touchy subject to you…you have likely already learned the lesson we are talking about today.  I have personally learned this lesson on my 1JZ S13 Drift Car, at multiple points throughout the build. With the guidance and knowledge of the team at Boost Factory, they helped me to recognize and accept that I had a problem when it came to my car building habits. Along with identifying my problem, they offered solutions!  During the final stages of building my S13, I read everywhere on forums that cooling water temperatures was going to be a challenge. I was so close to my car being ready for a tune here at Boost Factory and all the cooling options I was reading about were “expensive” and going to take me more time to attain. So what did I do? Went searching on Facebook Marketplace and similar sites looking for a radiator and fan combination. Immediately found a S13 specific, tucked radiator that came with a single electric pull-fan. This rad and fan setup was a quarter of the price of the cooling setups I was reading about on the forums. Great find, right…!? Wrong!  Long story short, I installed the rad setup and got the car tuned. Fast forward to my first drift day with the car and I can do about a 30 second lap of drifting before I have to shut it down, and do multiple cooldown laps to help the water temps drop. The car was essentially un-drivable with this cooling setup and I was also risking the health of the engine due to the high temps the car would reach while on track. High water temps means higher oil temps resulting in the oil thinning and so on. I had to address the issue.  I then reach out to Boost Factory and get the ball rolling on a proper cooling solution for the car and end up going with a Koyo Radiator, Flex-A-Lite dual electric fans with shroud, along with a custom swirl pot. I have now wasted my time sourcing, and installing the tucked radiator and I have also missed out on valuable seat-time at the track due to the car's inability to keep cool. Not to mention I have now paid more in the end than I would have if I had just originally saved up some extra funds and went with the correct setup for my application from the beginning. Luckily my engine did not suffer any damage due to my impatience, and the car is now cooling as it should, while allowing me to enjoy maximum seat-time at the track.  When you are investing your time and money into this automotive passion, it is worth the extra time and research to do it right the first time.
